The football icon lived a controversial life, astonishing fans around the world with his skills on the pitch, yet his vocal character away from the pitch made a few specialists decrease the effect he had on the game. His adoration for the Argentine football crew and for Boca Juniors go to the grave with him.
Maybe the most touching tribute for his memory was given by himself. In an arranged meeting he made on himself on his TV show “La Noche del Diez”, Maradona expressed gratitude toward the game that made him a worldwide symbol for its impact on his life, and even shared what his grave should state when the opportunity arrived for him to leave the world.
“Much obliged to playing football because it is the sport that gave all the joy, all the opportunity. It was like touching the sky with your hands. Yes, I’d put it in my gravestone: ‘thank you, football’,” the legend said in 2005.
