According to reports, Manchester United has been given the opportunity to temporarily acquire Espanyol striker Martin Braithwaite in order to help with their offensive issues.
With Anthony Martial sidelined since December 9 and likely to miss at least another 10 weeks due to a groyne procedure, Rasmus Hojlund is the only centre striker on the club who is healthy.
The Red Devils’ head coach, Erik ten Hag, stated on Friday that the club was subject to Financial Fair Play restrictions and that there was not enough money in the budget to sign a striker.
But Braithwaite, the seasoned attacker, has emerged as a potential possibility, and the 20-time English champions are reportedly considering the offer.
According to the report, before the January transfer window closed, Chelsea, Arsenal, Fulham, West Ham United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers were also informed of his availability.
Previously, Braithwaite was a Middlesbrough player in England. He made 40 appearances at Riverside Stadium between 2017 and 2019, scoring nine goals.
Prior to joining Barcelona, the attacker played for Leganes. In 58 games across all competitions, he scored ten goals for the Catalan team.
After signing a three-year deal with Espanyol in September 2022, Braithwaite joined the Catalan team and appeared in 56 games, tallying 21 goals and dishing out three assists.
With 21 games in the Segunda Division of Spanish football this season, the Danish international has been in outstanding form, tallying 11 goals and dishing out one assist.
Although Braithwaite’s contract with Espanyol runs out at the conclusion of the next season, he is reportedly free to leave before Thursday’s transfer deadline.
Whether Manchester United is interested at this point is unknown, as is the forward’s availability—permanent or on a short-term loan.
During his news conference on Friday, Ten Hag said that Marcus Rashford will be used in the midfield if Hojlund is unavailable or needs a break.
Rashford, an England player, may be subject to disciplinary punishment from the club, however, since he was seen at a Belfast nightclub the night before he was sick and skipped a Manchester United training session.
Ten Hag said on Friday that Rashford, who hasn’t been able to play at his best for the Red Devils this season, was doubtful for Sunday’s FA Cup match against Newport County because of sickness.
